February 2021
Bluebird Monitor Training Program - Zoom Event on February 24th at 7pm

Spring is approaching!!  With warmer temps we are happily anticipating the return of many birds to RHP - especially the eastern bluebird!  We are offering a Bluebird Monitor Training Program led by bluebird expert Dr. Joe Blanda.  Please join us for this 30 minute presentation explaining the role of a bluebird box monitor and how vital it is for perpetuating this species.

PLEASE CONTACT the RHP Volunteer Coordinator at volunteer-info@rjrd.org for more information and to help RHP build and maintain a healthy population at the park. It takes the assistance of many willing people to monitor the 15 or so bluebird boxes on the property during the March through August nesting season.

Spot this! Spotted salamanders are emerging from the ground after their hibernation. These amphibians live in hardwood and mixed forests close to vernal pools. An adult spotted salamander is dark brown or black with yellow or orange spots on its back and sides. The spotted salamander is the state amphibian of Ohio. You may even spot one at Richfield Heritage Preserve!

The forest floor is coming alive with green leaves called ramps. Also called wild leeks, these edible plants are plentiful. The leaves first appear in Spring, then a flower blooms in June when the leaves die back. The ramp is celebrated in many an Appalachian festival!

Coltsfoot is a perennial plant that looks similar to a dandelion when it blooms in spring. Coltsfoot often grows in ditches, along roadsides, on forest edges and on steep slopes prone to landslides. It tolerates wet, poorly drained areas.
